Bangkok Bliss: Day 1-4

My partner and I were blown away by the beauty and the serenity of the Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn. First and foremost, the architecture is stunning. The intricacy of the designs and the way the sunlight hits the temple is a sight to behold. Climbing up the central prang just before sunset, we could see the sun slowly setting over the Chao Phraya River, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink – a truly romantic moment that we’ll never forget.

Another aspect that made our visit to Wat Arun even more special was seeing people dressed in traditional Thai clothing taking photos around the temple. It is a popular spot for both locals and tourists to don beautiful, colorful traditional Thai dresses and capture stunning photos against the backdrop of the temple.

Yaowarat Night Market

If you and your partner are food lovers, adventure seekers, and night owls, then embarking on a food tour at the Yaowarat Night Market is a must-do activity for your honeymoon trip. Located in the heart of Bangkok’s Chinatown, this bustling night market offers a unique blend of flavors, sights, and sounds that will make your night truly memorable. In my opinion, the best street food in Bangkok can be found at Yaowarat.

My partner and I are both foodies at heart, so the first thing we did was dive straight into the culinary delights that Yaowarat has to offer. The air was filled with the mouth-watering aroma of food being cooked fresh on the spot. We started with some succulent pork satay skewers from a street vendor, followed by a steaming plate of Pad Thai at a small yet cozy eatery.

We then had a feast at Nai Ek Noodles and Lek & Rut Seafood, two popular spots in the area. At Nai Ek, the braised pork ribs were to die for – perfectly cooked and loaded with flavor. And Lek & Rut Seafood was a revelation. The seafood was incredibly fresh and cooked to perfection. Touring the Yaowarat Night Market and indulging in the delicious Chinese and Thai food made our honeymoon in Thailand all the more special.

Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is another awe-inspiring temple in Bangkok that is perfect for honeymooners. Located within the Grand Palace complex, Wat Phra Kaew is not just a religious landmark, but also a symbol of Thai culture and history. We were amazed by the intricate details of the architecture, the vibrant colors, and the stunning murals that depict scenes from Thai folklore and history. Walking hand in hand through the beautifully landscaped gardens, amidst the stunning backdrop of golden spires and colorful tiles, was incredibly romantic. This visit also gave us a deeper connection to the local culture, as we were fascinated by the reverence with which the locals treat the Emerald Buddha, and it was a humbling experience to witness their devotion. 

Bang Krachao

Bang Krachao, often referred to as the ‘Green Lung’ of Bangkok, was a breath of fresh air, quite literally, after the days we spent exploring the bustling city. For our honeymoon, we were looking for a blend of experiences, and a day of cycling in this oasis seemed like the perfect contrast to the busy streets of Bangkok.

We started our day early, renting bicycles from a small shop near the pier. The rental process was straightforward, and the shop owner even provided us with a map highlighting the key attractions of the area. Equipped with our gear, we set off to explore the network of elevated pathways that crisscross the area. 

One of the first things we noticed was the change in air quality. The air in Bang Krachao was noticeably fresher, and the lush greenery that surrounded us was a welcome change from the concrete jungle of Bangkok. As we cycled along, we encountered small villages, local temples, and even a few hidden cafes. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the locals seemed to go about their day at a leisurely pace.

Overall, cycling at Bang Krachao was a memorable and enjoyable experience for a romantic honeymoon trip.  If you’re looking for an alternative to the usual tourist spots in Bangkok, and want to experience the city from a different perspective, a cycling tour of Bang Krachao is highly recommended.

Baan Ice

Nestled amidst the lavish setting of ICONSIAM, Baan Ice stands out as a testament to Thailand’s rich Southern cuisine. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance oozed romance. Candlelit tables, soft traditional music, and a riverside view – what more could honeymooners ask for?

We were particularly taken by their Spicy curry with crab meat and wild betel leaves, which felt like a luxurious treat with its rich flavors and generous chunks of succulent crab meat. And then there was the ‘tom yum goong’ – a spicy and tangy shrimp soup that left a lasting impression on our taste buds. Every sip was a revelation of flavors, a beautiful balance of spicy, sour, and savory.

The price point is a bit on the higher side compared to local street fare, but for a honeymoon treat, it’s absolutely worth the splurge. The service? Impeccable. Every staff member made us feel like we were the only couple in the restaurant.

Just when I thought our honeymoon couldn’t get any better, we stumbled upon Neil’s Tavern. Hidden amidst the bustling streets of Sukhumvit, this restaurant is an ode to the classic steakhouses of yesteryears. On the recommendation of a friendly local, we decided to give it a shot and, boy, are we glad we did!

Walking in felt like taking a step back in time with its plush leather seats and dim, romantic lighting – perfect for honeymooners like us. We decided to start with the lobster bisque and it was an explosion of flavors. Rich, creamy, and full of depth. For mains, their signature steak melted in my mouth. It’s hard to describe just how perfectly cooked it was; each bite was a testament to the chef’s skill, further enhancing our delightful evening. My partner had the grilled salmon, and it came out flaky, moist, and with a delicate smokiness that lingered.

Our night was made even more special with their impeccable service. It felt like they knew it was our honeymoon without us even mentioning it. The cherry on top? Their classic chocolate lava cake. Rich, gooey, and just the right amount of sweetness to cap off a memorable evening.

Neil’s might not be the cheapest option in town, but for such a significant occasion, it was worth every baht. While in Chiang Mai, consider taking a day trip to Chiang Rai to visit the famous White Temple, also known as Wat Rong Khun. We’d heard so much about the White Temple, and we simply couldn’t miss the chance to see it in person. As soon as we arrived, we were taken aback by its sheer brilliance. The temple sparkled in the sunlight, with its detailed white patterns standing out. 

Hand in hand, we wandered around the temple, really impressed by the detailed patterns and shiny bits everywhere. Every corner seemed to tell a story, a fusion of traditional Thai culture and modern artistic expressions. There was also this pond with koi fish that made everything feel really calm and peaceful.

Inside, it was a different world. There were artistic details that surprised us, adding unexpected beauty to this unique temple.

Wat Rong Suea Ten

On our honeymoon adventure in Chiang Rai, we made sure to check out the Blue Temple, or Wat Rong Suea Ten. Seriously, pictures don’t do it justice! The entire temple was bathed in this vibrant blue hue, and everywhere we looked there were these awesome detailed artworks. Hanging out there, with the whole place glowing in blue, had this magical vibe. We just sat, taking it all in, feeling so lucky to experience it together on our special trip.

Wat Huay Pla Kang

On our honeymoon, we didn’t miss out on visiting the Big Buddha Statue at Wat Huay Pla Kang. Wow, it was massive! Climbing up, we were rewarded with this breathtaking panoramic view of the whole city. We later found out it’s considered one of the tallest Buddha statues in Thailand.

Cooking class in Chiang Mai

We decided to dive deep into Thai culture with a traditional cooking class. We got our hands dirty making classic dishes like pad Thai and green curry, all with fresh local ingredients. This hands-on experience will not only be fun but also useful when you return home and want to recreate these flavors in your own kitchen. Honestly, for other honeymooners out there, this is a must-do. It’s such a fun way to connect and bring a piece of the trip back home with you.

In Chiang Mai, right by the quiet Mae Ping River, there’s a special place called The Service 1921 Restaurant & Bar. It’s a mix of the old and the new, and it’s beautiful. During my honeymoon, we were looking for a special dinner, and this place was perfect.

When we arrived at the Anantara Chiang Mai Resort, The Service 1921 looked welcoming and full of history. The entrance, reminiscent of an old British consulate, told stories of bygone eras, whispered secrets, and decadent nights. Holding my partner’s hand, we stepped into a world that promised a fusion of Thai, Chinese, and colonial influences.

The evening began with cocktails, each inspired by age-old recipes but given a modern twist. As I took a sip of one of their signature drinks, I was immediately drawn into the rich history and tradition that seemed to be embedded in every flavor. The tastes were intricate and mesmerizing, truly capturing the essence of the era they represented.

For dinner, we indulged in a range of dishes that showcased the artistry of the chef. Each plate was a masterpiece—visually stunning and delectably flavorful. The spicy Thai curry, tempered with creamy coconut milk, was a revelation. Meanwhile, the dim sum—each piece a delicate parcel of joy—was unlike any I’d tasted before. The flavors were authentic yet innovative, a delightful dance between tradition and modernity.

What truly stood out, beyond the food, was the ambiance. We dined in one of the private rooms, surrounded by colonial artifacts, as soft jazz played in the background. It felt as if we had traveled back in time, with every detail exuding romance and nostalgia.

B Samcook Home 16 is a family-owned gem in Chiang Mai, celebrated for its Northern Thai fusion cuisine. With its intimate ambiance and stylish decor, it’s the perfect backdrop for a romantic dinner

The ambiance of the restaurant was relaxed yet trendy. We were instantly enamored by the koi pond and the impressive elephant statues, giving it a quintessentially Thai charm.

Being foodies, we couldn’t resist trying the Chef Table Set Menu. We were first served with Spring Rolls filled with Crab Meat and Cream Cheese, a delicious opener to our meal. Following this was a unique Tom Yum Soup with a Vietnamese twist, which tantalized our taste buds with its spicy and tangy flavors.

Our mains, the Grilled Salmon with spicy lime sauce and Confit Duck Leg with Mix Berry Sauce, were culinary masterpieces. Each bite was an explosion of flavors and showcased the innovative approach of Chef Boy, the talent behind the restaurant.

What was particularly delightful were the palette-cleansing juices served between courses. They enhanced our dining experience by preparing us for the next dish. And, as a sweet ending to our meal, we indulged in the traditional Thai dessert of mixed tapioca in coconut milk. It was a creamy delight.

B Samcook Home 16 certainly has a unique take on traditional dishes, and its contribution to Northern Thai Fusion cuisine is noteworthy. We felt the love and passion in every dish and the service was impeccable.

Our Top Hotel Pick for a Chiang Mai Honeymoon

We chose Le Méridien Chiang Mai for our stay, and it was so great. The rooms at this hotel seamlessly blend style and comfort. Each spacious and modern room features a generous bathroom equipped with both a rain shower and a separate soaking tub. The beds ensure a restful sleep, thanks to their comfort and high-thread-count duvets. Modern amenities are aplenty, with each room boasting a flat-screen TV, minibar, and complimentary Wi-Fi. 

What made our stay even better were the activities around. We had a blast at the Half Day Thai Cooking Course, picking up some cool recipes to try at home. The Doi Inthanon National Park was a beautiful escape, with its lush landscapes, and our evening visit to the Chiang Mai Night Safari was a fun adventure, getting to see animals in a whole new light.

And when it came to food, we were spoilt for choice. We loved trying the delicious Italian dishes at Favola and for a local treat, Kam Wan Noodle hit the spot.

Paradise in Phuket: Day 9-12

Patong Beach

Our trip to Phuket was unforgettable, especially the time we spent at Patong Beach. It was the perfect spot for us as a newlywed couple to bask in the sun, sand, and sea. We enjoyed romantic strolls along the beach, watched the sun setting into the ocean, and had a candlelit dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants. The nightlife at Patong Beach was incredibly vibrant, and we danced the night away, hand in hand.

Phi Phi Islands

We also visited the Phi Phi Islands, a breathtaking group of six islands located about 40 km southeast of Phuket. It was a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of Phuket, providing us with moments of peace and quiet. We took a romantic boat ride as part of the island tour, went snorkeling and scuba diving, and relaxed on the beach. The natural beauty of the islands was awe-inspiring, and we couldn’t help but capture the moments with our camera. No matter what kind of adventure you’re looking for, you’ll find it in some part of the island.

Old Phuket Town

Exploring Old Phuket Town was another highlight of our honeymoon. Nestled within the larger Phuket City, this “old city” area allowed us to dive deep into the history and culture of Phuket. We walked hand in hand along the streets, admiring the beautiful architecture, and visited several museums and art galleries. The vibrant street art scene was a pleasant surprise, and we took plenty of photos to remember our time there.

La Gritta

We decided to have a special dinner at La Gritta, having heard of its reputation as one of the most romantic restaurants in the area. Our experience there surpassed all our expectations.

Nestled within the Amari Phuket Resort, La Gritta Phuket offered us not just a meal, but an enchanting evening. The first thing that struck us was the breathtaking view of Patong Bay. As we sat on the wooden terrace by the sea, surrounded by swaying coconut trees, the tropical ambiance was both intimate and surreal.

Being fans of Italian cuisine, we were thrilled by the extensive menu. We started with the Insalata Caprese and Prosciutto di Parma, which was a delightful introduction to our meal. Following this, we indulged in the Risotto Marinara and Carpaccio di Manzo. Every dish was a testament to authentic Italian flavors. The highlight of our evening, however, was the Tomahawk steak from Australia. Perfectly cooked and generously portioned, it was a dish we relished together.

We had chosen to arrive around 6 pm, and it was the right decision. Witnessing the sunset over Patong Bay while sipping wine from their impressive list created memories we’ll forever cherish.

Service was impeccable. Efficient, attentive, yet unintrusive, the staff made sure our evening was uninterrupted. We also noted that the restaurant was spacious enough, with both indoor and outdoor sections, accommodating a significant number of guests without feeling crowded.

One recommendation for honeymooners would be to make a reservation, especially if you desire a table by the water. It’s evident that La Gritta is a sought-after dining destination in Phuket.

We went to L’Arôme by the Sea during our stay in Phuket. As we approached the restaurant, the breathtaking view of the Andaman Sea immediately captivated us. We had scheduled our visit to coincide with sunset and made our way to the rooftop bar. Over crafted cocktails, we watched the sun paint the sky in hues of orange and pink over Patong Bay.

The modern cuisine curated by Chef Yannick Hollenstein was a true culinary delight. Each dish was a blend of sophistication with unexpected twists. Opting for the 7-course menu with wine pairings, every plate felt like a journey through the best of French cuisine. The impeccable service only added to the charm, making the evening feel even more special.

Knowing about its recognition in the Michelin Guide for Thailand, the dining experience clearly showcased why it held such an honor. The ambiance was both intimate and enchanting, making it a night to remember.

Between courses, we took a moment to enjoy the ambiance, with the aroma of the sea and the serene vibes of Kalim Beach from its vantage point at the north end.

We opted for the Classic Room, a generous 50-sqm villa, and were pleasantly surprised with our private pool. An added luxury was the full Club InterContinental benefits that came with it. The room itself was adorned with rich hues and warm wood tones, giving it a welcoming and intimate feel. The modern amenities, including air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and swift internet access, made our stay exceedingly comfortable.

While we loved our villa, we couldn’t help but peek at the Three Bedroom Suite during our stay. At 360 sq.m., it looked incredibly spacious, boasting views of the landscaped surroundings and the pool. The hotel’s facilities were top-notch. The outdoor pool was refreshing, and the beachfront bar became our go-to spot for evening relaxation. We dined at Jaras Restaurant and were impressed with the modern Thai cuisine.
